WHY PLEDGE YOUR EYES?

History

In the early years, eye banks in India faced several challenges that limited their success. Public awareness about eye donation was very low, and preservation techniques for corneal tissue were not well developed. During the 1970s and 1980s, eye transplants were difficult to carry out due to poor donor-to-recipient ratios, inadequate infrastructure, and limited transport facilities. Although many eye banks were established, most struggled to function effectively because of these logistic and technical barriers.

Why Pledge Your Eyes?

Imagine a world of darkness

Eyes are one of the most vital sensory organs of life, and a world without vision is a grim prospect. Think about the life of a visually impaired person: you and I can see and enjoy the beauty around us, but they can only touch and feel it.

By donating your eyes, you can enlighten the lives of two blind persons. This noble gesture allows them to step out of darkness into a world full of colors.

Corneal diseases are a major cause of visual impairment and blindness in developing countries. The only treatment is corneal transplantation, but in India, the need far outweighs the availability due to insufficient donations.

You can make a difference by pledging your eyes, becoming a sight ambassador, spreading awareness, and motivating bereaved families to donate.

Eye Donation is Simple - Just Remember These Guidelines

  • Anyone can donate – age, sex, race, or religion is no bar.
  • Wearing glasses, having cataract, or certain eye problems do not prevent donation.
  • Inform close relatives about your wish to donate.
  • On death, inform the nearest eye bank immediately.
  • Donation must be done within 6 hours of death.
  • Close the eyes and place moist cotton over the eyelids to keep the cornea healthy.
  • Switch off ceiling fans near the body.

Important Facts

  • The removal procedure takes only about 20 minutes.
  • No special room or operation theatre is required.
  • No disfigurement is caused to the donor’s face.
  • Donated eyes are never sold or misused.
  • Each donation can give sight to two blind persons.

Over 2.5 million Indians need corneal transplants – your pledge can bring them light.
